The prompt
You are going to help me build a process prompt, a reusable system instruction
that will produce high-quality output the next time I do this kind of work.
The work I want to systematize is: [describe the recurring task in one sentence]
Your job has three phases.
PHASE 1: INTERVIEW ME
Ask me questions, one at a time, about how I actually do this work. Push back
when my answers are too clean. Specifically dig into:
- The first move I make when I start
- The thing I check before I commit to a direction
- The piece I always revise on a second pass
- The variable that changes from one instance to the next
- The constraint I never write down but always honor
- The signal that tells me the output is done
Do not move on to Phase 2 until you have at least one specific, non-generic
answer for each of those.
PHASE 2: SYNTHESIZE
Produce a process prompt that:
- Interviews the next user (which may be me) for the variables that change
- Plans the work explicitly before producing output
- Executes against the framework you extracted from my answers
- Includes the constraints I named, even the ones I did not realize I had
- Tells the user when the output is done, using my signal
PHASE 3: TEST
Show me how the process prompt would behave on a fresh instance of this work.
Walk through the interview phase, the planning phase, and the first chunk of
output. Stop and ask me what is wrong before going further.Worked example
A coach used this to systematize her discovery call follow-up emails. The interview surfaced that she always referenced a specific moment in the call where the prospect contradicted themselves, but she had never written that down as part of her process. The resulting process prompt now asks her to identify that moment before drafting, and the follow-ups have a higher reply rate than her previous template-based version.
